Kakadu

As we bounced along Kakadu’s rugged track, crossing a stream, I broke out in The Sound of Music’s ‘Climb every mountain, ford every stream…’ My head kept hitting the roof in the back seat.
A 200-metre red rock wall of the Arnhem Land escarpment framed the tour to Twin Falls. We climbed the escarpment for views over the ancient terrain. Aboriginal paintings in the caves were fifty thousand years old by some estimates. It felt like it here, in a land so red, so raw, both old and young. The heat penetrating. The glare blinding. The contrasts stark. Blazing blue and red. Magnificent .
