Poems and pictures
Date
May-June 2003
Location
Cape York
The Telegraph Track
Bumping along the telegraph track
Thrown around
Up and down
Hold on to your hat
Red road
On and on
No end
Forever long
Line to life from 1887
To 1961
From the tip of Cape York
To the place of Cook's berth
This red dusty road
Still provides the route north
Grand sweeping sunsets right at the top
Thursday Island
Military garrison
Protecting the top
Horn Islands’ troops
Of 5000 or more
No water for this
Valiant flying force
Protecting Australia
From the 1945 Japanese onslaught
And when you've been to see the tip
You turn around
And come straight back
Back again
Down that dusty road
Changing savannah
Green and gold
Black cockatoos
With brightest red
Cute couscous
And crocodiles too
Rivers and waterfalls
Magic too
All the wonders Mother Nature brings you
Camp oven
Fire place
Stinging wasps
Dirty face
Some singing
And laughs
Long evenings in the dark
Bright stars fill the sky
Till the moon makes its rise
To mark the end of another long day
On the long red road
Of the journey
North
